architectural accomplishments of the maya
The Maya people made a lot of advances in architecture, but they didn't have any metal tools, and this makes what they made even more impressive. One of the most impressive things that the Mayas made were pyramids like the one that you see in the background of this page. the Maya people had many structures built for spiritual purpose, and nearly everything had a purpose to please their gods. They also had very impressive structures for observing the heavens, and based a lot of their architecture off of the placement of celestial objects as well. The Maya also had one of the best, and most complex road systems of ancient times.
1) Pyramid- these pyramids were some of the most recognizable Maya structures, and they are even more impressive when you realize that the Maya didn't even have metal tools. These pyramids served as tombs for kings, as well as spiritual places. Many of the Maya temples were made so that when you clapped facing them the call of the Quetzal bird would echo back to you this was a very important animal to the Maya.
2) Ball Courts- These courts consisted of two long walls and a space in the middle were the players would actually be at. in the beginning they would make these courts have sloped walls, and later the walls would be straight vertical. The shape of the court from above was an I shape.
3) Maya Bridges- The Maya bridges were very interesting, again because the Maya people didn't have metal tools. these bridges were used for the same things that they are today, to cross water. These bridges would have taken a lot of calculations in order to be able to stand, and withstand the water. These bridges were made from wood and stone.
