The Maya writing was a alphabet of hieroglyphs. Three different Maya Codex (books) are still around today. The Maya peoples writing was very complex, and thanks to these codecs being around we are able to decipher most of the Maya writing. Included in the Maya language were the numbers 1 through 29 and the Maya based their very complex and accurate math system off of the number 20. The Maya writing had a mix of syllabograms ( representing syllables) logo-grams (representing whole words) and glyphs, (representing the names of Gods and places). The Maya writing was different from any other writing in the fact that it had a mix of these three types of symbols, and it had a number system as well.
